Is Your Cat Pregnant?
Many times when a cat is pregnant, the owner may not be aware right away. In order to make sure your pregnant cat receives proper care and nutrition you need to be able to detect early warning signs that your cat is indeed pregnant. Believe it or not, pregnant cats have similar pregnancies to human woman. They experience weight gain, eat more and even have morning sickness!
Some common signs to look for to help determine if your cat is pregnant are outline below:
Significant weight gain, the abdominal area will appear swollen. By the time any weight gain is visible your cat may already be 5-6 weeks along in her pregnancy. The pregnancy cycle is usually 9 weeks.
Cats experience morning sickness just the same as human women do when pregnant.
Your cat’s nipples will begin to grow and protrude, while also becoming very pinkish. At around 6 weeks they will start to fill with milk.
You may notice your cat is demanding more food than normal, many times this is a sign she is getting close to giving birth.
It is essential for you to be able to detect your cat’s pregnancy as early on as possible, this will allow you to take her to the vet and make sure she is healthy and prepared for her delivery.
Cats are known to seek a nesting place to have their babies, when you feel the time is approaching set up an old comforter in a corner of the house that she will be able to deliver her kittens on. Be sure to keep in mind that the birth of kittens is usually a bit messy! The cat will mark the area so that her baby kittens will recognize the mothers scent.
During the actual delivery the mother will take care of most by herself. You should however monitor the process and be sure to check mom and the kittens are healthy and okay.
